Welcome to Alpha Music

About Us

Alpha Music is part of Alpha Secondary School's thriving Visual and Performing Arts Department in the city of Burnaby in beautiful British Columbia. Students enrolled in music programs at Alpha explore the art form of music, both instrumental and vocal, in various small and large ensemble settings. The supportive environment of students and staff contributes to the growth of this musical community and the role that music has in our lives. Our ensembles provide unique opportunities for students to not only become excellent musicians, but outstanding role models and leaders in our community, learning values that will be with them for the rest of their lives.

Our Directors

Mr. Kevin White

Mr. Kevin White has just come to Alpha after teaching a highly successful music program at Burnaby Mountain for the past 14 years (2000-2014). He earned his Bachelor of Music majoring on the Trombone and subsequent Bachelor of Education at UBC. He also holds a graduate diploma in Wind Conducting from the University of Calgary learning from reknowned composers and conductors from all over the world including - Dr. Paula Holcomb, Clark Rundell, Dr. Eugene Corporon, Dr. Mallory Thompson, Gunther Schuller, Dr. Glenn Price, Frank Ticheli and more. Recently, he completed his Masters of Education also at UBC.

Currently, Mr. White serves as the co-ordinator for the BC Music Educators' Association Honour Wind Ensemble. The annual conference hosts five honour ensembles bringing students from around the province together for three days of intensive rehearsal and a performance at the BCMEA conference, led by top conductors from across North America.

He also works for the New Westminster and District Band Society as Director of the Intermediate Band which brings musicians, young and old, together to develop and explore musicianship.

Mr. White is excited about the programs being offered here at Alpha and is looking forward to working each of the ensembles and learning more about the students and the community.

Mr. Will de Sousa

Mr. Will de Sousa has come to work at Alpha after teaching in the Burnaby School District for a year. He attended UBC for his Bachelor of Music (2015) as a percussionist, as well as his Bachelor of Education (2016). Though he studied primarily as an instrumentalist during his time in university, he has had a large amount of choral experience through his involvement with choirs in the community.

Mr. de Sousa works outside of school as the assistant conductor of the Coastal Sound Youth Choir, working with youth from throughout the lower mainland at a high level of musicianship.

Through his connections in the choral community, Mr. de Sousa hopes to provide many opportunities for collaboration with other choirs throughout the lower mainland.

Mr. de Sousa is so happy to be working in Burnaby, the district he grew up in. Getting to work as a high school music teacher has been his goal since he was a teenager, and he is thrilled to be getting to reach that goal with the students at Alpha.
